đŸ Neutering Male Cats â Is It Always Necessary?
Clients often ask me: When is the best time to neuter a male cat?
Today I received this exact question from a family that adopted two boys from my cattery â one is 8 months old, the other 13.
Both are calm, donât spray, and donât yowl.
She asked me:
âIf everythingâs fine, maybe we donât need to neuter them?â
And I thought â thatâs a very valid question.
đ Letâs go back to how it used to be
In my childhood and youth, cats lived differently.
â They werenât neutered
â They didnât get vaccines
â They rarely saw a vet
Veterinarians were focused on livestock back then â and our cats just lived long, healthy lives.
We had one male who never went outdoors â only breathed fresh air on the balcony.
He didnât know females until he turned four, when visitors brought their queens to him for mating.
He sired kittens, lived a full life, and passed away peacefully in old age â intact, with everything nature gave him.
So when I look back on that, I keep asking:
If the cat is healthy, well-behaved, and not causing problems... why fix what isnât broken?
âïž Let's be honest. The two real benefits of neutering:
â No spraying
â No yowling for females
If your cat doesnât do either, then why rush into surgery?
đŹ Potential downsides of neutering:
â Hormonal imbalance
â Higher risk of obesity
â Increased chance of urinary issues â especially with dry food
â Lower energy and vitality
â It alters the catâs entire system â and sometimes, their personality changes
Letâs not forget: Neutering is the surgical removal of a fully functional organ.
Itâs not a minor procedure â it impacts metabolism, immunity, behavior, and long-term health.
đ± What about female cats?
With females, the stakes are higher.
Repeated heat cycles without mating can lead to pyometra â a dangerous infection of the uterus.
So if youâre not planning to breed â itâs usually safest to spay your queen.
đĄ My perspective as a breeder:
If your male cat is: â calm
â clean
â not spraying
â not yowling
Then neutering is not a must.
Itâs an option â not a rule.
Each animal is unique, and the best decisions come from observation and understanding, not routine.
đ§ I donât offer popular opinions â I offer honest experience.
You donât have to agree with me. But if youâre asking â this is what Iâve seen, and what I believe.
